How do I know the difference between a waxed wood and varnished / polyurethane wood?

I have a dining table that is in desperate need some refinishing. My mom bought it at an auction of goods a few years ago and I'm assuming its quite old (probably about 50 years or less). Anyway. I do not know if you have a wax finish or varnish on it and I do not know how to count. Does anyone know?

Put a drop of water in the soil and leave to 24 hours. If the surface turns white fall knows the plant has been waxed.
