Introduction to Optical Coatings
By: RL Fielding
Optical coatings are used to manipulate the reflectance and transmittance of a optical component. Typical examples include optical layer: Antireflection coatings reduce the amount of light reflected at a given wavelength range or length wave, narrowband filters that allow only a particular window of wavelengths to transmit and High Reflector Coatings used in the production of mirrors. More Specifically, the usual coating of broadband optical lens and use the layer v anti-glare coatings to maximize the impact of the application. Shroud optic broadband custom work on a broad spectral range, so Generally, ultraviolet, visible or infrared light, reducing reflectance and transmittance increase, while V-coat custom optical lens coatings work best over a length specific wave.
Coatings are designed for light incidence angle for a specific and specific light polarization, such as S-polarized P-polarized or random polarization. If a layer is designed for light in a zero degree angle, but is used with the light on a forty five degrees of angle of incidence, the coating will not perform in said transmission and reflection specifications. Similarly, coatings are generally designed for random polarized light for the use of P-polarized light So with a coating of randomly polarized light again will fail to produce the specifications described.
The coatings are created by depositing dielectric and metal materials such as SiO2, TiO2, or Al, in thin layers that are typically thickness equal to a quarter of the wavelength of light used in the application. These thin films between the layers of alternating high refractive index, and low refractive index, thereby inducing the effects of interference necessary. Most have some type of optical coating optical companies are also able to design and implement solutions as coating.
Below are definitions of common terms used in industry Optical coating:
Control of thickness of glass:
The oscillation frequency of a decrease in crystal quartz 5 MHz, as coating materials are deposited on the glass. Consequently, the thickness of the layer in the crystal can be calculated by measuring the fall of oscillation frequency of the crystal. The crystal is placed in the center of the coating chamber and the thickness of the coating on the glass is used to calculate the thickness of the coating optics.
Dielectric:
Materials exhibiting high transport (not absorption) across many wavelengths - The UV through the visible wavelengths in the IR.
Optical Monitoring:
The direct measurement of a reflectance optics, by reflecting light off the lens and measuring the intensity of the reflected light. A similar procedure can be applied for transmission of measurement. For certain applications, the accuracy of the technique of optical monitoring yields greater than the bulk crystal control.
Splash:
Material involuntarily expelled in the form of larger particles of the piece of coating material. These particles can be embedded in the substrate and defects the surface.
Thin Film:
Any movie that produces constructive or destructive interference when light is transmitted through or reflected from it.
There are a wide range of techniques used in the application of optical coatings. The three application techniques covering most common are:
IBS: Ion Beam Sputter. Cathodic process in which energetic ions produced by a cannon ion.
PVD: Physical Vapor Deposition. Coating material is heated causing evaporation so that evaporation condenses on the lens, leaving a film. The coating material can be heated by a focused beam of electrons or secondary heat through electrical resistance.
Cathodic: energy molecules coating material are created by rupture accelerated ions in a target of coating material. The sputtered then forms a durable material, stable optical deposit. The accelerated ions are normally produced in a plasma of inert argon.
