The Treasury Gardens consist of 5.8 hectares (14.4 acres) on the south-east of the central business district of Melbourne, East Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The gardens are bounded by Wellington Parade, Spring Street, the Treasury instead, and the Fitzroy Gardens, on Lansdowne Street to the west. Sir William John Clarke Memorial. The marble bust, circa 1902, located in the Treasury building. Erected by public subscription and unveiled by the Governor of Victoria on 22 July 1902.
Robert Burns Memorial. Replica of the bronze sculpture of GA Lawson, erected in the original birthplace of the poet, in Alloway in Scotland. Commissioned by the Caledonian Society in Melbourne, and first erected in St Kilda Road in 1904, and moved to the gardens of the Treasury in 1970 because of roadworks.
President John F. Kennedy Memorial. Bronze bas-relief by sculptor Raymond B. Ewers. Erected in 1965 and located next to the specially landscaped pond and water fountain.
History
1850 - The area of the gardens was as open space after the failure of the ratings to sell because of the swampy land.
1867 - Clement Hodgkinson, designed the gardens as a pattern crossing diagonal paths lined with trees. The willows were planted around an ornamental pond.
1902 - William Guilfoyle, director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne transforms into a Japanese garden pond. This garden is demolished after the Second World War.
1929 - management of the gardens was taken to the city Melbourne
1934 - Treasury Gardens was used by the Victoria community to celebrate the centenary
1939 - Toilet block built for the carnival and the festival of spring flowers. Recognized as important for its rare architectural Art Deco design, decorative pattern of bricks and tile construction and extensive use of iron wrought details, including grills, doors, lamps, signals and brick planter, showing exceptional craftsmanship.
1965 - Monument, was built with U.S. President John F. Kennedy
1996 - Fitzroy and Treasury Gardens Master Plan was approved by the Council
