It was not always so easy to make copies. Now you can go to a copying machine and press the print button and instantly receive perfectly replicated copies of our originals. Only forty seven years ago when the machine was a pen and some sheets of carbon paper. Instead of pressing a button I had to write and write and then write some more! Just before the 60's it was a reality and carbon paper was a bestseller. Chester Carlson, a patent attorney knew much of a pain that was going to continue rewriting everything by hand, because Carlson had arthritis. Carlson had an idea of designing a machine that could automatically make copies, so I had to do all that copying by hand.

Consider doing your work without a copier. You probably have a hard time imagining. Did you know you that most manufacturers do not believe that a copier would be very useful? Chester tried for years to get people to take their vision, but nobody was concerned. Between 1939 and 1944, Carlson got the thumbs down by many companies, including IBM, Kodak, General Electric and RCA.

In 1937, Chester invented a process called electrophotography. He changed the name to Xerography in 1938. He thought that if the image of an original document is projected onto a photoconductive surface, current would flow only in areas where the light shone on him. The first copy was made with a layer of sulfur in a zinc plate. He took a glass slide and wrote about it 10-22-38 ASTORIA ink. Then down in the shade to darken the room. He built an electrostatic charge by rubbing the surface buy sulfur with a handkerchief. After the slide is placed on the surface and a light shone on him for a few seconds. Lycopodium powder and then pumped into the sulfur layer. Gently blowing on the surface, loose dust and blew all that was left was the inscription, 10-22-38 ASTORIA. 10-22-38 is the date that the first copy. Astoria was the location.

The Birth of Xerox company decided to take a chance on the dream of Carlson was the Haloid Company. Haloid was a photo-paper manufacturer in New York. Guess what came to be known as? Yes, the Xerox Corporation. In 1960 came the first office copier. Xerox 914 was the model. It was the first office copier that can make copies on plain paper.

Being a photocopier technician for over twenty years I have been the copiers copiers well with evil. I started working copiers in 1983. Copiers I started working with were dirty and would not last long between the service. The machine prices were very high, especially for high-volume copiers. There were some interesting ways of transporting the paper through the machine like the Sharp SF-740. He took the paper with two clamping devices which were led in chains. This machine fused toner to paper with a toaster oven-type device.

Some people can even remember having to pour copier toner from a bottle. But today's copiers have a cartridge system that works well. They keep most of the toner in the copier, not in the best pair of pants or dress. They have rollers to fuse the toner to the paper and have very sophisticated paper feed and transport systems that help reduce congestion problems. Digital copiers are now on the market. Now not only can copy, but print, scan and fax, even with them. Perhaps the most revolutionary change in the industry is full-color copier. Sales of color copiers have begun to exploit. There are plenty of exciting new products to be introduced and the quality is really good. We have come a long way from '10-22-38 Astoria Carlson. I just can not help thinking what the future will bring. What will the copier in the year 2020 look like?

Chestor F. Carlson (1906-1968). Chester F. Carlson was born on 8 February 1906 in the city of Seattle. His father was a barber and he came to live in San Bernardino, California. It was a bright young man and I was curious how things worked. Carlson mother died when he I was seventeen. They say that Carlson has donated $ 100 million to charity before his death in 1968.
