Hot Metal Coatings
A pot in which metal conducts, while melting in a furnace called a "melting pot". It is made of silicon carbide and clay graphite.
Shapes of crucibles: A bilge shaped crucible has the shape of a barrel. The part of the crucible in the middle region is called as bilge water. This is the most wide of the plate and has the maximum diameter. The top of the crucible has lesser diameter than the bilge water. The base of the crucible has lesser diameter than the top. As a general rule, the # of a bilge crucible is the number of pounds of aluminum to maintain. For bronze and brass, thrice the # can be held. For example, a crucible 5 # bilge can hold about 5 pounds of aluminum and 15 pounds of copper. This general rule applies to bilge shape only.
An "A" crucible so has a greater depth and narrow top. There are straight sides that are bent outwards. The diameter continuously increases from the base to the top. As it is easier for making this so that the bilge, the crucible of a shape has a lower cost. Compared with the equivalent bilge style, the ability of the A shaped crucible is lower.
Both the above forms can be made in clay graphite and silicon carbide.
Properties of crucibles: A crucible must be able to withstand extremely high temperatures of molten metal. For this, the melting point of the material used to create the crucible must be more than the melting point of metal that are placed in the crucible. In addition, the crucible material must have excellent strength, even in the white hot state.
Melting metals like aluminum and zinc, a melting pot of homemade steel can be used. The reason is that the melting point of aluminum and steel is less than steel. In this case, the inner surface steel crucible undergoes scaly or flaky. Because of this scale, molten metal is contaminated. The thickness of the walls of the crucible decreases rapidly. Therefore, a Marcote layer-7 applies to the inner surface of crucible steel. The use of steel crucibles is OK if the contamination due to the scales is not considered serious.
Materials used: For the construction of a crucible refractories usual (ie, silicon carbide carbon bonded graphite and clay) can survive the extreme heat of the smelting works. In addition, silicon carbide is a very durable material.
Some of the pots clay graphite can be used to 2750 degrees Fahrenheit. Some are used as crucibles up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. These crucibles can be used to manage the gold, silver, bronze, brass, aluminum and zinc alloys.
The crucible in a way to have a rough surface finish and some students along the edges. However, this irregularity not interfere with the performance by any means.
While handling crucibles, tongs proper installation should be used. Sound clips can result in damage or total failure of the crucible. Amid the base of the furnace and crucible should be a disk of cardboard or a layer of Plumbago.
